The first thing a stair inspector measures is not rise or run — it is variance: whether every riser matches its siblings within 3/8 of an inch. Uneven stairs trip people; that is the code's actual concern, and it is why professional stairbuilding is a template discipline, not a measuring discipline.
Where variance is born
- Re-measuring every stringer: each tape read adds error; five stringers, five layouts, five different stairs.
- Framing-square creep: the square shifts a degree mid-line and the riser grows an eighth.
- Unaccounted finish floors: hardwood at the bottom adds ¾ in to the first riser unless total rise was measured finished-to-finished.
- Crown and warp: layout on crowned stock transfers the crown into the geometry.
The template method
- Pick the straightest board for the layout stringer; crown up, defect-free.
- Lay out with a clamped jig: two framing squares or a stair-gauge set to the calculated rise/run — locked, not hand-held.
- Cut the layout stringer carefully — circular saw to the line, handsaw the corners.
- Test-fit it: rise to finished floor, headroom at the top, seat on its supports.
- Clamp the template to every blank, trace, cut. The template IS the tolerance now.
The math behind the discipline
Your calculated riser (say 7.444 in for a 106.5-in rise over 14 risers) is a repeating decimal — no tape resolves it. The template converts it into a physical artifact: measure once, copy precisely. The calculator's job (rise & run, stringer stock) is producing those two numbers honestly; the template's job is protecting them through five cuts.
The two errors templates fix best
- The accumulating riser: seven stringers re-measured drift a half-inch high by the end — the top riser fails first inspection.
- The mirrored mistake: layout remembered instead of copied puts the saw kerf on the wrong side of the line once — and the stair climbs unevenly forever.
Cut once, copy precisely — the 3/8-inch rule is not a challenge to your tape measure. It is an instruction to stop using it.
